Darby House, The Grove, Nottingham (Nottingham)

A fantastic house. Brimming with character. Jill and Richard are around if you need them.

For full transparency: This is not self contained as described. The owners son lives in the guest part of the house and the area is also used by the host at points. Bathroom was for guest use only.

An easy walk to the theatre…. But I would suggest not walking alone at night as we encountered some unsavoury characters.

The room was big and spacious and the bed was comfy.

Great stay again with Richard. Lovely house, much of which is shared digs for theatre people. Very comfortable bed, parking and shared kitchen. 15 minute walk or a tram to Royal Centre. Will be back!

Rick and Gillian are the BEST hosts. Gave me plenty of space but was there in a heartbeat if I needed anything. Own kitchen to cook in. Huge room and a really comfortable bed. 20 min walk to the theatre. I'll be staying here again when I tour next.

Lovely place, lovely people. Just make sure to have the correct post code for taxis/deliveries as there is another road with the same name on the other side of Nottingham.

My stay here was very pleasant, it was a quick commute to the theatre by tram or an easy walk in. The hosts were friendly, and despite there being other theatre people renting rooms on my floor, I felt like I had privacy and hardly ran into anyone else! Having a separate kitchen just for guests was great and I made use of it.

This was my Third stay with Rick. The room is wonderfully comfortable, still with one of the best beds I've had on tour. The shower cubvicle in the room is very welcome, as is the really comfy armchair. Super easy to get into town via the tram which is a 5 min walk away. Until the next time!

Spacious room. 20-25 mins walk to theatre royal. Would recommend taking tram as it takes less time. Didn't get to see much of Rick and Gillian but on the brief conversations they seem friendly and helpful.

Rick and his wife were absolutely lovely and were always there if I needed any help.
I would absolutely recommend staying here, it is about a 15-20 minute walk or if you like a lime bike, 7 minutes max to get to the theatre.

Had a lovely stay here! I stayed in bedroom 3, which was spacious and comfortable. They provided winter duvets and heating was set to our show schedule, which I thought was very hospitable. Any problems, Rick sorted them instantly. Would stay again.

Rick was a great host who communicated well throughout and made sure I was comfortable and had everything I needed during my stay. The room was spacious and the distance to the Theatre Royal was manageable by walking. All in all a great Digs and I'd happily stay there again.

Rick is friendly and accommodating. I was moved from my original booking to a better room so he could help out someone on another show, which he rang to explain - in the other person's situation, I would have appreciated that hugely. Location is easily walkable to theatres, quiet, and some great shawarma/dosa/grill joints and ASDA practically on the doorstep. Strong recommend.

Everything was exactly as the pictures show. Easy check-in, not far to the theatre, perfect for a budget. Would definitely stay again.

The road to the house where you park is extremely bumpy and has lots of pot holes. I have an older A3 which was absolutely fine, however if you have low suspension in your car, or don't want to risk it in general, you'd need to park elsewhere.

I had a lovely time here. I didn’t get a chance to meet Rick in person because I was out most days but I met Gillian and we had the loveliest chat. You may see other reviews about the figurines but the house was own by an art collector and one could call their taste eclectic. I walked most nights from the theatre and it was alright. The walk goes through the university. The garden is lovely!!!!

Had a great stay with Rick in his absolutely beautiful home. Really nice guy and was only a text/call away if we needed something. I was in Room 3, very cosy and bed was really comfy, plenty of space in the room. The bathroom was perfect, great shower!! A really easy 15/20 minute walk to the theatre and plenty of local shops nearby too. Thanks again Rick and will most definitely stay again when I am back in Nottingham! :)

Rick was brilliant from start to finish. The house is lovely and so full of character, with an extremely comfortable bed. It's a good 20min walk to the theatre (but a very nice one, mostly downhill) or it's 5 mins walk to the tram stop which gets you right to stage door in about 7mins. Rick was very understanding when me and the other guests from my show were feeling the January weather and he kindly left the heating on for a couple of extra hours, which was marvellous. Highly recommend!

This was my second stay with Rick. The room is so comfortable with one of the best beds I've had on tour and a really comfy chair to spend those non-work hours relaxing in. Rick and his wife were super accomodating and lovely! They have a beautiful garden and are not far from the tram station or just a 25min walk from the theatre. My tip would be plan your night time transport if you’re a woman alone. I didn’t feel 100% safe walking it alone at night.

A lovely welcome from Richard and Gillian. Their home, set back in a garden oasis, is simply wonderful, full of character. Room was large, warm and clean as was the bathroom and kitchen. One of the most characterful places I've stayed, Rich was very welcoming and accommodating of a last minute booking. The bed is comfortable and with a heavy duvet to counter the cold, it's a very large old house so the heating is only on for set periods but that never bothered me.

The room I stayed in didn't have curtains on the top window - that I saw anyway - which wasn't a massive issue but something to be aware of if you stay here.

This stay was great. A chance to actually relax and feel at home. A wonderful property that allowed me my own space. The hosts were exceptionally friendly and were extremely helpful at all points. I think this is my 3rd of 4th time staying as I am always so comfortable here! Rooms are so spacious and the separate kitchen is well equipped. Rick and Gillian are the most welcoming hosts and just leave you to it. About a 20 min walk with up and downhill and less than £6 in an Uber. I’m sure I’ll be back soon!

I had mis-read the en-suite shower as an en-suite bathroom with a shower but is is just a shower. Bathroom opposite so not a huge problem. Not a fan of spiders and there were lots of cobwebs in my room. Great location and lovely hosts.

Good location; 12 minutes door to door via tram to Theatre Royal or about a 20 minute walk. Near local amenities, and guests have access to self-contained kitchen. If you get cold easily bring a hot water bottle as the house is an old Victorian house

Richard et all were lovely. It’s a good place to lay your head. Kitchen was a little unkept but I’ve got OCD so it’s all relative. Other than that it’s perfect if you’re out and about seeing the sights of Nottingham and working at the theatre.

A lovely, quirky house with brilliant hosts. You have your own kitchen space and bathroom which is amazing. The road isn’t great if you have a large car but the theatre is only 20 min walk or a 5 min Uber away so can’t complain

Rick & Gillian are the loveliest people, so kind & accommodating. We got Ubers to and from the theatre, which were relatively cheap. The rooms are huge & the shower is amazing! I had everything I needed to feel comfortable, thank you so much!

Second stay here. Lovely place to stay when in Nottingham, Rick and Gillian are friendly and welcoming. About 20 mins walk to theatre but easy enough to stroll in and out. Would definitely stay here again.

Richard & Gillian were really lovely hosts. Rooms are huge,the bathroom etc clean. Great to have the use of a fully equipped guest kitchen. 20min walk to the theatre, at night I got an Uber and it was between £3/5. Would def stay again

Best place ever! Don’t miss meeting Rick and Gill and the magnificent house and garden are truly... theatrical!!

Large room and comfortable bed. The shower in the main double is an interesting touch, I bet it's handy for some but I still had to use the main bathroom for everything else! The walk in takes 20 mins though is up and down hill if that bothers you!

Great hosts. Beautiful house - decor was right up my street! A lovely place to keep yourself to self and not feel in the way. Close to the theatre/centre. Free parking. Only problem, there were some hot water issues but it was fixed by the 2nd day.

Rick and Gillian are delightful, kind and welcoming hosts. On the first day they invited me to share their Sunday roast! The house is huge and eccentric, crammed with eclectic curiosities. The bedrooms are spacious, and the guest bathroom is great.

Great digs which are a 20 min walk on 5 mins on a tram from the theatre royal. Rick is a great host making me feel very welcome and also by adding the extra night at such late notice. Kitchen facilities are great. Will be staying again.

I had Main Double 1 which was a large room with a desk & shower. 25 min walk to Theatre Royal, fast Wi-Fi, small shops nearby. 'Theatre' kitchen with tumble dryer. Cat in house but never seen. Only con was room didn't retain heat when heating off.

Honestly some of the nicest digs I’ve ever stayed in! Lovely room with an en suite shower, separate guests’ kitchen which gives it a feeling of being self contained, and most importantly a tumble dryer! Hosts were lovely and really helpful.

Large room, my bed was extremely comfy. Always slept really well. Bathroom is modern & always hot water. Shared kitchen/laundry was great.

Best of all was Rick and Gillian. Nothing was too much trouble. Would definitely stay again. Home from home.

I absolutely loved these hosts! They were fabulous, friendly, laid back and very accomodating, without being in your face. I really felt at home and I rarely say that, unless I am at home! Can not reccomend highly enough. Really charming house too!

I absolutely loved being here. Both Rick and Gillian were stars and their garden is off the scale beautiful. The house is so unusual and characterful, extremely memorable. R&G were very kind when I came off my bike. Fabulous.
