Your hosts/accommodation:
=====================
We are Mark and Mark - a mature gay couple offering our spare double-room for use by theatre professionals. One of us works part time front of house at the Mayflower theatre so we understand the pressures and stresses you experience when working and the long, late hours you endure.
All you need at the end of a show is to return to a relaxed, hassle-free environment where you can unwind in peace and comfort. For that reason we offer space in our quiet 1930's semi-detached, centrally-heated home located on the banks of the river Itchen in Bitterne. We choose to share our home as a way of supporting the local Arts and to meet interesting people, not to make a profit - so we don't make surcharges for laundry or energy use,
We live in a quiet cul-de-sac with no through traffic. There is a local train line at the bottom of the garden but trains are short-length, infrequent and not intrusive - they do not run overnight.
Being self-employed we both work from our home most of the time and are usually around to help with any queries etc., but are very respectful of your privacy and do not intrude unnecessarily on your space or time. That said, we are a sociable, well-traveled couple and are more than happy to sit and chat over a cuppa or glass of wine.
Getting to the Theatre:
=================
We acknowledge, being in the suburbs, we are a little further out of town than some and charge accordingly. You can use the information below to help decide if we are suitable for your needs.
Bus: Southampton Mayflower and MAST Studio theatres are a 10 minute bus ride away with ten minutes (max) walk at each end. Buses are £2 max per trip until 6pm and £1 thereafter regardless of route/distance. The nearest stop is a mere 5 minutes away from our house, but walking a further 7 -10 minutes into Bitterne village will give access to far more routes and frequent buses (we use the buses and are more than happy to help advise on best routes/times according to your required attendance times at a performance).
===
Walk: When weather permits, we often walk to the Mayflower. You should allow about 50 minutes to walk to either the Mayflower Theatre or MAST Studio.
===
Train: We are equidistant between Bitterne and Woolston train stations - each being about 20 minutes walk. Note the train service to Southampton Central station is generally only once an hour (except in rush hour). Southampton Central Station is located just a couple of minutes walk from the Mayflower theatre .
===
Taxi/Uber: A taxi to the theatre averages £9-£14 dependent on time of day/demand.
===
Drive: Taking your own car is about a 15 minute drive and there are large multi-storey car parks adjacent to the theatre. Charges vary but average £1 per hour and you now have to pay to evening park from between 6pm and 8pm.

Guests have access to an electric fan oven, 4-ring gas hob, microwave, space in the fridge/freezer as needed and your own storage cupboard for groceries.

We do accept smokers (being ex-smokers ourselves) but do kindly request that you only smoke outside on one of the two raised decking areas, both of which have seating. These, along with the garden are also available for guest use as weather permits. Note the garden is also shared with 'Fred' our well behaved tortoise (March through October) and our four chickens Blanche, Sophia, Wilma and Betty.
Local amenities
============
Bitterne shopping precinct is about 12-15 minutes walk and there is a wide selection of local shops including Poundland, Iceland, Greggs, Superdrug, Peacocks and a large Sainsburys supermarket. Woolston centre is 20 minutes walk in the opposite direction where there is a large Lidl supermarket, a Co-Op grocery store, Boots, Superdrug, Subway, a well-stocked Polish delicatessan and many smaller independent shops. For quick top ups, newspapers, alcohol etc we have a 'One-Stop' convenience store at the end of the road.
We are well served with local take-aways and restaurants and there is an award winning craft ale bar a short walk away (25 minutes). If we are not in we are probably there or at the theatre.. We can offer recommendations for local places to eat and drink if needed.
